Lions coach and CEO get more resources
Brisbane will open up their purse strings and appoint a general manager of football, five full time AFL assistant coaches and upgrade facilities at the Gabba after an internal review pin uncovered flaws.
Former Adelaide Crows chief administrator John Reid, organisational specialist Terry Coyne, Lions CEO Michael Bowers and Voss conducted a five week post-season review of the club's operations after a dismal 2010.
Club chairman Angus Johnson was vague when explaining the recommendations in detail or why they were allowed to evolve but said Voss and Bowers would have more staff and the club's training facilities would be upgraded.
Johnson said the club may have been complacent after winning three straight premierships (2001-03) and this was a self correcting process and a wake up call.
"There was a review of every aspect of the football department," Johnson said
"Vossy has been working with arm behind his back. He has been under resourced.
"Michael Bowers has been under resourced as well.
"The board is fixing that. We are pouring significant resources into this football club to give both of these guys the opportunity they deserve."
Reid, who was general manager of football operations at Adelaide, will take up the post in a caretaker role, while Voss has one more coaching position to fill.
Johnson and Bowers danced around questions on whether they had been too frugal in recent years for their own good and more concerned about profit and loss than the team's welfare.
Voss welcomed the change in the board's attitude and increasing the football department's staff which will allow him more time to coach and be with his players.
He had only two full time assistant coaches in 2010.
"It wasn't up to scratch or where we wanted it to be," Voss said.
Bowers said the club had fallen off the pace compared to other clubs when it came to funding its football department and updating facilities.
"The facilities at the club are well over 10 years old...they are out of date and we need to improve it," Bowers said.
Johnson hit back at critics who say the Lions have salary cap issues and it's why players such as Jared Brennan and Justin Sherman wanted to be traded.
"Our issues with the salary cap have been grossly exaggerated," Johnson said.
"We will always be under the salary cap and we are under it enough to manage things quite comfortably."
Bowers said they had a list of candidates they would head hunt for general manager of football operations and Voss said he hoped to sign the last of his full time assistants in the near future.
