Elias facing more charges

Rugby league identity John Elias is facing additional charges of allegedly harassing a witness in the NRL betting scandal investigation.

Elias, 48, was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and charged with breach of bail relating to contact with a witness in the investigation into suspicious betting activity on the now infamous North Queensland-Canterbury game last August.

He was refused bail and will appear in Bankstown Local Court in Sydney's southwest on Thursday.

Elias was also charged with two counts of using "carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence".

On those counts he was granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on April 7.

Elias and player agent Sam Ayoub were arrested on March 3 and charged with attempting to defraud betting agencies.

Former Bulldogs prop Ryan Tandy was charged in February with four counts of providing false or misleading evidence.

A client of Ayoub, Tandy has pleaded not guilty.

Tandy was sacked by Canterbury last week after refusing to tell the NRL club whether he had placed a bet on another match, between the Bulldogs and Gold Coast.

Wednesday's arrest is the latest by Strike Force Suburb detectives, who are attached to the State Crime Command's Casino and Racing Investigation Unit.

The strike force was established last year to investigate irregular betting activity surrounding the round 24 Cowboys-Bulldogs match.

The incident involved a plunge on an "exotic" betting option that the first points of the game would come from a penalty goal.

Tandy was penalised two minutes into the game for impeding Cowboys playmaker Grant Rovelli in front of the posts.

The Cowboys did not opt for a kick at goal but chose to take a quick tap and scored a try out wide.

Police say investigations are continuing.
