Swans rookies set to blossom: Roos
Paul Roos knew he had some special talents on his books when Sydney drafted Lewis Jetta and Trent Dennis-Lane as part of the AFL club's rebuilding process.
To Roos, it was a matter of "when, not if" they would succeed in the big league, and according to the veteran mentor the club's faith was justified midway through the Swans' 44-point victory over the finals-bound Western Bulldogs on Saturday night.
The two 21-year-olds played starring roles in the upset victory, with Dennis-Lane kicked four goals while Jetta threatened to tear the game open with every touch.
Jetta's second goal of the game in particular was a peach, with the Swans Districts product slotting it from 50 metres out and earning praise from his coach.
"That's the sort of stuff we saw on his tapes last year: 50 metres out, pinpoint accuracy and it went about four or five rows back," Roos raved.
"That's the sort of thing you're going to continue to see and I think now that he's kicked that first goal certainly his confidence is a lot better and he's using the ball very, very well.
"He backs himself, it's something we spoke about from the moment he got here and that's the reason we recruited him.
"The (possession) he got out of the stoppage there beautifully at one stage and he weaved his way through, they're the sort of things hopefully we'll see in the years to come because he's very, very talented."
Roos reserved high praise for forward Dennis-Lane, who is also starting to shine with a bit of confidence.
"Clearly it was his best game of the season and again a bit more like what we saw in the WAFL tapes last year," Roos said.
"He's starting to get a bit of confidence, and that's what happens when you start playing these guys a bit more.
"(He has) the ability to find space, kick goals, he can mark it, and he's very good when the ball hits the ground as well - he can score a couple of those crumbing goals."
The young duo will have another chance to impress their coach ahead of the finals when the Swans take on Brisbane at the Gabba this Saturday night.
