Mumford out as Swans chase home final
Sydney will be looking to lock up an AFL home final when they travel to the Gabba to battle Brisbane on Saturday but will have to do it without key ruckman Shane Mumford.
Coach Paul Roos confirmed 24-year-old Mumford will miss the round-22 clash after he suffered a medial ligament strain in the first quarter of the Swans' 44-point victory over the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.
The injury means Roos will be forced to tweak the make-up of his in-form squad just a week out from the finals, with Mumford's rucking duties likely to be shared between rugby union convert Mike Pyke and versatile youngster Jesse White.
"The early indications are that he definitely won't play this week and he's probably 50-50 next week," Roos said.
"Clearly we're not going to take any risks with him.
"Pykey's obviously done an extremely good job this year, without (injured ruckman Mark Seaby), so we'll have to pick out a second ruckman as well.
"Teddy Richards has done it in the past, Jesse White has done it in the past ... but at this stage it would probably be Pykey and Jesse changing those roles."
The Swans did receive a welcome boost with news that Ryan O'Keefe had overcome his groin injury and would line up this weekend.
O'Keefe, a late withdrawal from Saturday's win, and fellow forward Jarred Moore are both fit to face the Lions, while Daniel Bradshaw is a chance to play reserves this weekend.
Roos said he was not afraid to tinker with the forward line to accommodate the returning stars, despite the impressive form of rookies Louis Jetta and Trent Dennis-Lane.
"Obviously we've got Ryan O'Keefe coming back in and Jarred Moore will come back in as well so we'll probably restructure our forward line a bit," he said.
"It's been going well but I wouldn't underestimate Daniel's importance as we saw earlier in the season.
"It's good to see a couple of those young blokes having a real impact at this stage of the season."
