Woosha won't unleash wooden spoon
West Coast coach John Worsfold won't use the "gimmick" of the wooden spoon to motivate his players in the final month of the AFL season.
The last-placed Eagles face off against fellow strugglers Brisbane in Perth on Saturday night in a match that will go a long way to deciding who will finish last on the table.
West Coast, with just four wins to their name, currently occupy the position but the 15th-placed Lions are only a win and percentage above them.
Worsfold, speaking after Sunday's 75-point hammering at the hands of Fremantle, said it would be detrimental to use the wooden spoon as a way to motivate his player group out of their form slump.
"I want to teach these players to motivate themselves to want to be the best they can be and not always want to try to rely on a gimmick, because you are going to get to an important game one day and run out of gimmicks, and that's a big trap," Worsfold said.
"It (the wooden spoon) has always been irrelevant other than the fact it's pretty disappointing we're at the bottom of the ladder.
"We've got to stay focused on what we want to achieve going forward.
"And we've got four really tough weeks ahead to show something to each other about not just playing out time, the challenge is players have still got to want to still put their body on the line and still commit to contests.
"We saw (Andrew) Strijk last week (get cleaned up against Carlton) and we saw some pretty committed efforts today from the players.
"Are they prepared to continue to show that sort of commitment to each other?"
Worsfold was confident Shannon Hurn, who was a late withdrawal against the Dockers due to a hamstring injury, would return against the Lions.
But midfielder Chris Masten is set to miss the match after rolling his ankle early against Fremantle.
