McKenna's Gold Coast need more mentors
Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna admits too much responsibility is falling on too few as he looks forward to the end-of-season arrival of senior AFL players.
McKenna said former 149 game North Melbourne midfielder Daniel Harris and delisted Collingwood pair Danny Stanley (five games) and Sam Iles (seven) are the most sought out by fellow players.
Code-crossing recruit Karmichael Hunt, who hobbled off the field late against Box Hill Hawks with adductor tightness, is a hit in the gym.
"When you are looking out for role models and you have 42-45 on your list, there's three blokes that stand out and that's (not) a lot for everyone to gravitate to," McKenna said.
"Poor old Harro, Sammy Isles and Danny Stanley go to beds most night with headaches because of all the questions.
"Yes, we'd love another three or four senior players here just to spread the load because the verbal attention the other boys get affects their performance.
"Our next role model is Karmichael and he shows them how hard to work in the gym."
Despite the lack of AFL experience on his list, McKenna said the dearth of genuine on-field leaders was providing a valuable insight into the psyche of his young list.
He said many of his young chargers were being forced to take on leadership roles well before their time which was more beneficial for the clubs 2011 AFL debut than if they had been over-protected.
"That's the negative," McKenna said.
"The upside is we are going to fast-track these blokes.
"If we had to go through this round one, round two, round three, round four at AFL level next year, they won't be 10 or 15 goal beltings they will be bigger than that."
The GCFC big-name recruit Hunt will have a fortnight off to concentrate on speed and endurance and is expected to be trialled in the midfield when he returns.
