Karmichael Hunt moves to defence
Karmichael Hunt's life as a full-forward has lasted just one week, with the former Brisbane Broncos star being assigned to defence for Gold Coast's next VFL match.
Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna said former Lions champion Shaun Hart would be Hunt's mentor for the next fortnight, grooming him for a role in the backline against Frankston on June 26.
But defence will be a temporary home.
After this weekend's bye and playing in the back half in the clash with Frankston at Broadbeach, Hunt will be thrown into the midfield, where he can lay his bone-crunching tackles, in the following round.
"Our plan is he will tag Shaun Hart this week and next week and we'll look at playing him down back," McKenna told AAP.
"He will work with the defenders for the next two weeks and learn what we expect down back.
"Then after that he will have a crash course in the midfield and he'll play, based on his first game, only a half.
"I don't think he'll get through more than a half."
Hunt's endurance is McKenna's biggest concern after the code-crossing athlete suffering cramps during his first senior Australian rules match against Coburg last Saturday.
However, the coach utilised the former Bronco's tackling skills at training on Wednesday at Carrara by having him oversee tackling drills.
McKenna said Hunt had brought more to the club than the media spotlight and cynics as he possessed skills many of the young footballers at the GCFC could learn from.
"His life is tackling, so it's no different to us asking Matthew Lloyd or Matthew Richardson to come up here to teach goal kicking," McKenna said.
"He does that (tackling) on auto pilot and one of his skills is in the gym lifting weights.
"He's going to take their tackling to another level and they can learn off him when he does weights."
