AFL lashes out at Bingle's legal team
The AFL appears unlikely to sanction Brendan Fevola over the Lara Bingle nude photo saga with Bingle's camp frustrating the AFL's efforts to conduct a proper investigation.
And former Hawthorn great Dermott Brereton added fuel to the fire on Friday by claiming Bingle, whose engagement to Australian Test vice-captain Michael Clarke is on rocky ground, knew Fevola was married before having a fling with the AFL forward.
Bingle has threatened to sue Fevola for defamation, alleging the former Carlton spearhead and current Brisbane squad member circulated a photo of her standing in the shower, taken on his mobile phone during their brief affair in 2006.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said numerous requests to interview Bingle had been turned down with the investigation almost certain to fizzle out unless Bingle and her legal team have a change of heart.
Fevola has already been interviewed by the AFL over the incident but Demetriou lashed out at the Bingle camp and, in particular, her agent Max Markson.
"The legal team acting on behalf of Lara Bingle haven't been co-operative," a clearly annoyed Demetriou said in Perth on Friday.
"We've made several requests to interview Ms Bingle but they haven't agreed to those requests, that's their prerogative.
"I'm not sure why they wouldn't want to.
"They are pretty quick to get into the media and say all sorts of things and even tee off at the AFL but I would suggest that if they are serious then they make available Ms Bingle.
"I know that (chief of football operations) Adrian Anderson's team interviewed Brendan, they understand his position and that's why they are keen to interview Ms Bingle."
When asked how long the AFL could persist with the investigation, Demetriou said sarcastically: "I think Max Markson can determine how that goes, he's going beautifully.
"He seems to be pulling all the strings and calling the shots so we'll leave it to him."
Brereton claimed he had told Bingle that Fevola was married.
"She came over to me and said 'I just met that guy Brendan Fevola, what's he like?'," Brereton told SEN radio.
"I said he's a ratbag but he's a good bloke.
"She said 'does he have a girlfriend?'.
"I said no, he doesn't have a girlfriend but that pretty blonde next to him is his wife."
Demetriou refused to get drawn into Fevola's alleged affair.
"I'm not going to comment on the private lives of people and what decisions they make other to say we treat the matter very seriously, particularly because we educate all of our clubs about taking photographs and distributing without people's consent," he said.
