Fevola re-signs with Carlton until 2011
Enigmatic full-forward Brendan Fevola admits he has done some silly things in his time at Carlton, but said leaving the club would have been among the silliest.
Fevola said public speculation during his long-running negotiations that he was contemplating heading elsewhere had been a "joke", after he signed to stay with the Blues for the next three years.
"I was never going to leave Carlton," he said.
"Carlton has been my home for 10 years, it's like a family here.
"I'm the longest serving player here at the club, we've got such a young group - all these No.1 draft picks, all the young kids coming through - I've done some silly things but I'd be pretty silly to leave the club.
"We're on the way up, so there was no way I was going to leave."
The new deal, reportedly worth $2.1 million, does not contain a behavioural clause, despite the club warning him on the eve of this season that he would be sacked if he had another alcohol-related misdemeanour.
Earlier this year, Fevola was placed on notice that he would be sacked if he had another serious off-field breach, after he was caught urinating on a nightclub window.
"Fev's told me he's not going to have any more issues, not that he had that many," interim president Stephen Kernahan said.
"He's confirmed to the footy club that he will be very well behaved over the next three years (and) I think Fev can do the job for us."
Fevola's contract has been this year's biggest talking point at Princes Park, with reports that Sydney was attempting to lure the 2006 Coleman Medallist on what was rumoured to be a $3 million, four-year deal.
The Blues' frustration with the saga was evident a fortnight ago, when coach Brett Ratten publicly warned the 27-year-old star there was a limit to what Carlton would pay him.
It prompted Fevola to ring up a Melbourne radio station to declare his allegiance to the club.
In a bid to quell the ongoing saga, Carlton announced on July 21 that negotiations were on hold until season's end.
But they quietly resumed discussions with Fevola's management early this week and reached agreement on Wednesday.
"It's such a relief to get it done now and not the end of the year and I'm just rapt the club's shown faith in me for the next three years and the way we've been playing on the field, it looks like it's going to be a pretty successful three years," Fevola said.
"I didn't really realise they (my management and the club) were still talking. I came off track yesterday and had a missed call from Mark (Kleiman), my manager, and I rang him up and he said `everything's ready to go'."
Fevola revealed he had wanted a four year contract, but added he knew he was pushing his luck.
"I chucked the four out there but it got shut down pretty quick, I was happy with three," Fevola said.
Fevola, who was recruited in the 1998 draft, said he was determined to play out his AFL career at the one club.
"Once you get that name on that locker, you're etched in history," he said.
"To be a one club player meant everything to me - you look at the NRL, players are going everywhere, I've always wanted to stay here.
"I was quite happy to let it go until the end of the year and I think the club was as well but obviously it's done now which is good."
