Broncos lose Glenn for Dragons showdown

Former club captain Gene Miles has strong reservations about suggestions powerhouse Brisbane prop Dave Taylor could partner Justin Hodges in the centres against St George Illawarra on Friday night.

Broncos coach Ivan Henjak indulged in some mind games with his former boss Wayne Bennett on Thursday, tossing up the possibility of using 115kg man mountain Taylor as a shock replacement for injured youngster Alex Glenn (ankle) in the centres.

Taylor was destructive when drifting out wide against Cronulla and Penrith in recent weeks and he finished the game against the Panthers in the centres.

"We've got a couple of options there but I can't say too much," said henjak with a grin after Glenn was ruled out at training.

"We've got Benny Te'o, Dave Taylor and we'll bring Guy Williams into the squad as well and Ralphie (Steve Michaels) so we've got a couple options there.

"Dave's been playing out wide for the last few weeks and doing a pretty good job."

A colossus of a centre for Brisbane, Queensland and Australia during the late 1980s and early 1990s, Miles believes Taylor is almost unstoppable when he isolates players out wide in attack.

But he isn't so excited about him marking up against Origin and Test representative Matt Cooper or the under-rated Beau Scott.

"They're two of the best centres going around," Miles said when informed Taylor was being considered for such a key role.

"He's been getting out wide the past three weeks but if he started in the centres when the opposition was nice and fresh it could be suicide.

"The footwork some of these guys have got, he could be made to look very silly.

"In attack, great.

"One on one out wide, they can't handle him. They have to call for reinforcements as soon as they see him move out there.

"But the intensity tomorrow night will be like a final and while Dave's got good footwork for a big man, he could still be made to look very ordinary."

Miles said Taylor was reaping the rewards of getting himself into shape after being a source of frustration for the Broncos.

"Dave is seeing the fruits of his efforts now playing a lot of minutes," said Miles.

"He's done the hard yards in the Queensland Cup, whipped off some unwanted kilos and now he's just unstoppable out wide.

"He's finally realised how much havoc he can wreak and wondering why he wasn't doing it in March and April."

Henjak dismissed talk of Brisbane's State of Origin players losing focus, having previously promised not to forget an incident involving Dragons prop Justin Poore and Queensland prop Steve Price in the third Origin game last month.

Poore's actions in lifting an unconscious Price up by his jumper and dropping him after he'd been knocked out in a fight with NSW rival Brett White infuriated the Brisbane players - especially Hodges and forward leader Sam Thaiday.

"Time is a wonderful thing for forgetting things like that," said a relaxed Henjak.

"It was pretty raw at the time when it happened but it's been quite a while since and I'm sure most of the guys have moved on.

"It's close to the end of the year and if you are in the semis and you'd hate to be missing games because of ill discipline."
