Broncos set to consider Clinton's future
Former representative prop Joel Clinton is sweating on a decision on his future as the Brisbane Broncos board consider whether to sack him on Tuesday.
Clinton's $250,000-plus contract could be torn up after the former Penrith Test front-rower admitted to breaching the club's code of conduct late last month after inviting a female friend to his hotel room the night Brisbane played the Wests Tigers.
The club stood Clinton down from last Friday night's game against Melbourne and its board is under pressure to deliver a stern message following a number of incidents in the past 10 months, including three high profile players being investigated over an alleged sex assault last September and another fined for urinating in public in the NSW north coast holiday town of Byron Bay recently.
Clinton's breach was not serious and not alcohol related.
But the 27 year-old has left himself open to be made an example of should Brisbane's board decide to make a statement to its players.
It would however seem a fairly tough, even harsh penalty to terminate his contract given other players have committed worse offences and got off with fines.
The Broncos were not making any comment on the likely outcome of Tuesday's board meeting and Clinton did not return calls on Monday.
Close friends however said he was concerned rugby league's current climate could go against him even though his mistake was only a minor one.
