Hawks regain key players, Gilham injured
Even as Hawthorn start regaining key AFL premiership players, their injury-plagued start to the AFL season continues.
Defender Stephen Gilham returned for last Sunday's win over North Melbourne, but he is out again with a swollen knee.
It is the same knee that was injured previously, delaying his start to the season.
The Hawks had already lost Grant Birchall (thumb) and Xavier Ellis (foot) for Saturday's MCG match against Port Adelaide.
But they regained three premiership players - ruckman Robert Campbell and front-line midfielders Jordan Lewis and Brad Sewell - for their first senior games this season.
Simon Taylor will return from suspension, further easing Hawthorn's problems in the ruck, while they omitted newcomer Ryan Schoenmakers.
Hawks football manager Mark Evans said the club would have a better idea next week how long Gilham would be out of action with this latest setback.
His knee became swollen after Sunday's win over North Melbourne.
"The good news is we've regained some taller players, plus some experience - the bad news is we've lost a couple more along the way," Evans said.
Midfielder Hamish Hartlett, Port Adelaide's top pick at No.4 in the national draft last year, will make his senior debut.
The Power have also promoted Tom Logan after captain Domenic Cassisi and Peter Burgoyne were suspended.
Brisbane recalled Jamie Charman and Jared Brennan for Friday night's home match against Collingwood, with Matthew Leuenberger (knee) injured and Albert Proud omitted.
Magpies key forward Anthony Rocca will play his first senior game since round 13 last year amid four changes.
Midfielder Jaxson Barham, the son of former Collingwood great Ricky Barham, will make his senior debut.
Tyson Goldsack and Alan Toovey were recalled, while Brad Dick was omitted.
Collingwood had to leave out captain Nick Maxwell and Heath Shaw through suspension and Ben Johnson has a broken leg.
Adelaide have ended their suspension of key defender Nathan Bock after one game and also recalled Robert Shirley for Saturday night's home game against Geelong.
Bock was charged with assaulting his girlfriend earlier this month.
The Crows left out Nick Gill (hamstring) and Scott Stevens (concussion), while the Cats promoted Shane Mumford for Trent West.
Under-performing North Melbourne midfielder Daniel Wells has a hip injury and will miss Sunday's Etihad Stadium game against Essendon.
The Kangaroos have also dropped Corey Jones, with Ben Warren and Levi Greenwood set to make their senior debuts if they make the final team.
Top Essendon midfielder Mark McVeigh was named in their squad - he has not played so far this regular season because of an ankle injury.
Richmond have dropped Jay Schulz and Richard Tambling for Sunday's must-win MCG match against Melbourne.
Highly-rated Western Bulldogs key forward Jarrad Grant is in their squad for Sunday's Subiaco match against West Coast.
Sydney have named Kristin Thornton for his senior debut at the SCG on Saturday against Carlton, with Jared Crouch sidelined by a hamstring injury.
Carlton recalled Dennis Armfield for Jeff Garlett.
In-form St Kilda made no changes for Saturday night's Etihad Stadium game against Fremantle, who recalled Roger Hayden and Paul Duffield for Greg Broughton (ankle) and Clayton Hinkley.
