Hawks given keys to the city
Hawthorn's AFL premiership team has been presented with the keys to the city by the council that the club used to call home.
The Hawks were honoured at a civic reception at Hawthorn Town Hall in the City of Boroondara, in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
Although the club no longer has a presence in the suburb, about 500 Hawthorn fans gathered outside the Town Hall to watch the presentation.
Hawthorn captain Sam Mitchell thanked the council and the fans for their attendance and support.
"We didn't realise how much this means to so many people," he said.
"It's been a few days now so thanks for coming out today."
Hawthorn's celebrations will continue on Tuesday when they meet with fans at the club's home ground, Waverley Park.
