Former league star Shearer in car crash
Former rugby league Test and State of Origin player Dale Shearer is in critical condition in hospital after a crash on the Sunshine Coast.
The 43-year-old Queenslander was driving his Porsche at a roundabout at Peregian Springs at around 11.10pm (AEST) on Saturday when he lost control of the vehicle.
A Royal Brisbane Hospital spokeswoman confirmed Shearer was in a critical but stable condition.
"I've spoken to the family but they don't want to make any further comment at this stage," she said.
A police media spokesman said officers had taken a blood sample from the 43-year-old to investigate whether alcohol had played a role in the crash.
The speed at which Shearer was travelling at the time of the crash will also be investigated by police.
An emergency services spokeswoman said crews attended the scene near the corner of Murdering Creek Road and Emu Point Road shortly after 11.15pm (AEST).
"The man was suffering head and chest injuries and was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a serious condition," the spokeswoman said.
Shearer played 20 Tests for Australia and 26 State of Origin matches for Queensland.
The crash happened one year after his wife Delyse's death from cancer.
