Wentworthville down Jets for NSW Cup

It took 13 missed field goals and a record-equalling 104 minutes, but Wentworthville finally scored the premiership-winning try in golden point extra time to defeat Newtown 12-8 in a bizarre NSW Cup grand final.

The scores were locked at 8-8 from the 49th minute, after which the two sides traded missed one-pointers amidst the dropped balls that continually invited their opposition to grab the game.

Magpies five-eighth Mark O'Grady, the son of former Newtown grand finalist Graeme, missed five field goal shots himself before laying on the grubber for winger Iwi Hauraki to score the matchwinner for the Parramatta feeder club.

The marathon game equalled the longest-ever rugby league match, a Super League Tri-Series game between NSW and Queensland in 1997.

"My legs were gone. Every time I'd kick the ball I'd cramp up so I didn't really want it but no-one else was stepping up so I tried to have a go but it wasn't coming off," an exhausted O'Grady told reporters.

"I just thought I may as well have a go (at a try) here, we're only going to miss another drop goal, so what else can you do?"

Wentworthville coach Rip Taylor said he'd sent out a message after the third of his side's eight missed shots.

"You can't print what I was going to say but it was something to do with cut their foot off and run the bastard down the right edge," he said.

"I just wish they had of done it a little bit earlier than what they did."

Hauraki, the cousin of Eels forward Weller and currently in negotiations with opposition the Jets, also claimed credit for his match-winner.

"You could see everyone was just watching the drop kick, eh?" he said.

"I was the one calling it, he just finally done it for me ... third time lucky."

Wentworthville had always looked the better side and Newtown probably didn't deserve their 8-4 halftime lead.

The Magpies dropped the ball twice over the line in the first half and second-rower Justin Horo was held up early in the second.

The Jets got on the board first when winger Shaun Foley went over in the right corner for a 4-0 lead after seven minutes.

Wentworthville fought back and winger Jonathan Wright crossed in the 19th minute for 4-4.

But against the run of play a minute later, Jets winger Byron Ford brilliantly hauled in a catch-and-pass and stayed a blade of grass inside the corner post to make it 8-4.

The Magpies then went over in the 49th minute when centre Etu Uaisele crashed over to level it up at 8-8.
