Gidley kicks Knights to win
Newcastle halfback Kurt Gidley kicked a wobbly 32-metre field goal to give the Knights a dramatic 17-16 golden point win over Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium.
Gidley's kick scraped over the cross bar to take the two premiership points in a thrilling game.
Two desperate field goal attempts had earlier been charged down when the game ended at 16-all after 80 minutes.
Broncos five-eighth Casey McGuire smothered Danny Buderus' snap with a Superman dive with five minutes remaining before lanky Knights forward Matt Parsons did the same thing to McGuire's field goal attempt in the dying seconds.
Both sides were out on their feet when the extra period started.
Buderus kicked the winner 2m:23 seconds into the golden point time.
Ben Ikin, who stepped into the halfback boots of injured star Shaun Berrigan appeared to have set up a win for Brisbane when he gave the final pass to winger Michael DeVere who snapped a 10-10 deadlock in the 65th minute.
Video referee Tim Mander kept the big Suncorp crowd of 32,747 on the edge of their seats checking for knock-ons and off-side before flashing the green "try" light up to send the crowd into uproar.
But Newcastle hooker Danny Buderus came to the rescue with a superb solo try in the 71st minute which tied the scored again at 16-all before the two failed field goal attempts.
Brisbane was down 10-4 at half-time and at times looked to be struggling with the pace of the contest.
