Burgoyne signs performance-based deal
Port Adelaide have re-signed premiership star Peter Burgoyne to an unusual performance-based contract, in which he will have to earn the right for a second year.
The 30-year-old's new contract contains a "games-played clause" for 2009, which he will have to meet to trigger an extension in 2010.
The club did not publicly reveal the number of games needed to meet the clause.
Skipper Warren Tredrea has also committed to a new one-year deal.
Burgoyne's new contract was worked out after an inconsistent 2008, in which he was banished to the SANFL late in the season for disciplinary reasons and struggled for form at times.
But the inaugural Power squad member, who had 225 AFL games to his name, responded to questions over his future by blitzing with a combined 82 possessions in the final two rounds.
Port football manager Peter Rohde said the club was confident Burgoyne could play on to 2010 and beyond.
"Even though this is a one-year deal we see no reason why he can't play for as many as three more years," Rohde said.
"His form in the last two matches, when he had consecutive best-on-grounds, certainly showed us the improvement he has made."
Tredrea had been publicly assured by the club he would be re-signed, after going in for shoulder surgery after round 17.
He and Burgoyne are Port's two most experienced players and, along with ruckman Brendon Lade, are the Power's only remaining members of the squad that was formed in 1997.
