Dockers extend Mundy, Murphy contracts
Fremantle utility David Mundy has signed a two-year contract extension with the Dockers, which will stave off interest from rival AFL clubs in his home state of Victoria.
Mundy and forward Ryan Murphy, both 23, have agreed to stay with the Dockers until the end of the 2010 season, the club said.
Their signings was good news for Fremantle, who will lose young ruckman Robert Warnock, who recently told the club he wanted to return home to Victoria to be closer to his family.
Mundy has played 86 games in succession across his four seasons with Fremantle and his talent in either the midfield or across the half-back line attracted interest from several clubs, reportedly including Richmond and Hawthorn.
Mundy's decision to delay signing a contract extension prompted speculation he would return to Victoria.
"There has been a lot of unnecessary and unfounded speculation in the media about David's intentions," said Fremantle chief executive Steve Rosich.
"We have always been comfortable with David's decision to review his contract at season's end.
"Once David had resolved the terms and conditions of his contract it took only 24 hours to reach a final position with his management."
Rosich commended Mundy and Murphy, also from country Victoria, for showing loyalty to Fremantle.
"It highlights the commitment both players have shown, not only to the club, but to their teammates and Fremantle supporters," he said.
Mundy said the club's loss of experienced players had influenced his decision to remain in the west.
"I'm excited about the opportunities at the club in 2009 and beyond," he said.
"With the retirement of so many senior players there will be a lot of opportunity for guys such as Aaron Sandilands and myself to step up into leadership roles."
Murphy played nine games in 2008 for a total of 40 since his debut in round 16, 2004.
