Dockers to do it for McManus farewell
Fremantle swing man Luke McPharlin admits it will be tough for the team to keep their emotions in check when they farewell club stalwart Shaun McManus in Sunday's AFL western derby with West Coast.
And outgoing chief executive Cameron Schwab has chosen to remain tight-lipped as his name continues to be linked to vacant positions at rival clubs in Melbourne.
McPharlin said McManus, who announced on Monday he would bring an end to his 14-year career after this week's derby, was an inspirational leader at the club and the players had to be careful not to allow their emotions to spill over on the day.
"It's going to be difficult," McPharlin said.
"Shaun's always been someone who has been very emotionally charged with his football and I think drags everyone along with him so it's going to be hard to keep a lid on it.
"But obviously we are going to have to maintain some sort of composure to not go over the top with it come this Sunday."
McPharlin said the team would be doing everything within its power to send McManus off on a winning note.
"For us personally (the motivation) is to send Shaun McManus off on a good note. That will be our absolute focus this weekend because he deserves it and he demands it this week, so everyone will be doing their absolute utmost to give him that honour this weekend," he said.
"I think he just embodies everything that is Fremantle and he's a terrific, genuine bloke to have around the place and I guess he just does whatever he says he is going to do and that's probably his greatest trait.
"He's a man of action. He's inspirational in that sense and obviously he was here from the beginning and is pretty much the face of this football club.
"It's a tremendous honour for us to be playing in his last game and hopefully doing him the honour of winning it."
Meanwhile, Schwab is keeping his lips well and truly sealed amid mounting speculation he will take up the director of football post at Richmond following Sunday's axing of Greg Miller.
Schwab, who will move to Melbourne next week, will continue to work with the Dockers in a project-based role until his contract expires on October 31.
Last week Schwab dismissed rumours that he was interested in the vacant chief executive's position at Melbourne following the shock dumping of Paul McNamee, although it is believed the Demons have not given up on luring Schwab to the club.
Schwab declined to comment on a report linking him to the director of football position at Punt Road, where he became the youngest chief executive in AFL history, in 1988.
