Brumbies won't miss Schalk Burger
The Brumbies prospects of keeping their Super 14 rugby final hopes alive have been boosted by an injury to Stormers star Schalk Burger but coach Laurie Fisher is more focused on his team converting more of their scoring opportunities.
The Brumbies, who are riding a three game winning streak, enter this weekend's round in seventh spot, one place and three points behind the Stormers.
The in-form South African team, who have won their last four games and six of the last seven, have been rocked by a series of late season injuries.
Springbok flanker Burger, arguably the world's most dynamic forward, was ruled out of the remainder of the Super tournament after suffering knee ligament damage in last week's win over the Highlanders.
Already resigned to being without winger Tonderai Chavhanga (hamstring) and prop JD Moller (shoulder), the Stormers will also now be without hooker Tiaan Liebenberg for the clash at Newlands on Sunday morning AEST.
The loss of Burger is a particularly damaging one to the Stormers.
"It's got to have some impact, but the bloke who replaced him Robbie Diack is a big built forward, so they won't lose anything in size or aggression," Fisher told AAP.
"Obviously they will lose those things that Schalk brings to the game."
The one positive piece of fitness news for the Stormers was the reports that New Zealand born five-eighth Tony Brown's rib injury wasn't serious.
He trained on Monday and will be considered for the Brumbies match.
Fisher reported no injury problems for the Brumbies, who were due to train on Tuesday and Wednesday and rest on Thursday.
Fisher, who will be replaced as head coach by Andy Friend next season, accepted his team couldn't afford to lose the Cape Town clash if they wanted to make the finals.
"If we don't beat them we're no chance," Fisher said.
Fisher noted the Stormers hadn't scored "a lot of tries" for a highly placed team, but was none the less respectful of their style.
"They are playing good field position and have an excellent five-eighth in Peter Grant and (centre) Jean De Villiers is playing really well for them.
"They have a very hard working forward pack, an excellent lineout and driving game, so they haven't got any real weak spots".
Fisher was looking for a more clinical display from his side following their last gasp win over the Lions.
"We certainly have to build on last week where we created a lot of opportunities and line breaks," Fisher said.
"We just didn't choose the right options, so that's what our focus is this week, to create as many chances but to take more of them."
While the Waratahs aren't leaving until two days before their clash with the Bulls in Pretoria, the Brumbies opted to head to South Africa a full week before their game.
"Traditionally we like to spend a week here, that's what we've always done, that's what the guys are comfortable with," Fisher said.
