Stormers beat Hurricanes in Super 14
The Stormers withstood a second-half surge by the Wellington Hurricanes to win their Super 14 match 20-12 on Saturday.
The victory lifted the Stormers to fourth in the table while the Hurricanes slipped to sixth.
The home team led 20-0 with 24 minutes left before the Hurricanes rallied with two tries.
The Stormers went in front when flyhalf Peter Grant kicked an easy penalty.
Stormers lock Andries Bekker then crashed over for the first try in the 35th minute and Grant converted.
Grant slotted a 23-metre penalty one minute after the restart before number eight Luke Watson surged on to winger Sireli Naqelevuki's kick, evaded a tackle and latched on to a return pass from Bekker to set up a try for hooker Schalk Brits.
The visitors finally broke through when scrumhalf Piri Weepu charged from the blindside of a scrum near the Stormers 22 to create a touchdown for winger Hosea Gear.
Flyhalf Jimmy Gopperth converted and the Hurricanes continued to boast the majority of late possession, leading to a second try by Conrad Smith in the 65th minute.
