Sampi denies Dogs' day
West Coast wonderboy Ashley Sampi became the Western Bulldogs' latest AFL torturer, with his goal after the siren handing the Eagles a draw at Subiaco Oval.
The men from Whitten Oval deserved to snap their nine-game losing streak with a win, but for the fourth week in a row they failed to convert a final quarter lead.
The `Dogs failed to hold their nerve in the dying seconds with Andrew Embley marking an errant Robert Murphy kick some sixty-five metres from goal.
The wingman wheeled immediately onto his right foot and booted the ball toward the goals where teenager Sampi held an uncontested mark from close range.
The siren sounded as he walked back, but he managed to curl his kick just inside the post to leave the scores levelled at 19.10 (124).
Sampi's heroics overshadowed a magnificent performance from Bulldogs forward Nathan Brown, who kicked seven goals and handed off three others.
Veteran Rohan Smith also excelled while even the ever-smiling Brad Johnson would have struggled to grin after being denied victory despite an inspirational effort in his 200th match.
The `Dogs' may be the first interstate team to leave the west with any points this season, but they are still on the bottom of the ladder and six points behind their nearest rivals.
Eagles coach John Worsfold said his players did not deserve to split the points in front of a crowd of 38,540 which swept them home.
"We didn't deserve to win the game but we never gave up," he said.
