Medhurst goal burst sinks Blues
Goal-hungry Paul Medhurst arrested his form slump with a career-best seven-goal haul to guide Fremantle to a 28-point AFL win over Carlton at Subiaco.
The 21-year-old small forward had been kept goalless in the last fortnight but worked over four opponents in the 19.13 (127) to Carlton 15.9 (99) victory.
The victory was Freo's club record fifth on the trot in front of its biggest non-derby crowd of 33,000-plus fans.
The Dockers (7-3) built up a healthy lead early in the match and while the Blues battled hard, whenever they threatened, the home team had their measure.
Freo coach Chris Connolly will be relieved his players walked the walk after adding some heat to the contest with a pre-match blast on dual premiership Blues coach Denis Pagan.
Connolly said Pagan inferred the Dockers were weak and soft for playing an uncontested brand of football.
But the locals dismissed that claim within the opening seconds with Blues captain Brett Ratten dislocating his right shoulder after a bone-rattling Paul Hasleby tackle.
The young Docker is a carbon copy of Ratten but the 31-year-old premiership player initially shook off trainers before succumbing to the injury minutes later.
He was taken to hospital during the match and was understood to have had his shoulder put back in place.
The win sees the Dockers inch closer towards locking up their first finals berth while Pagan's debut season at Optus Oval looks like being a long one.
