Port continues Subiaco dominance
Port Adelaide's dominance at Subiaco Oval has continued with the Power defeating a spirited Fremantle side to enter the AFL's mid-season break firmly entrenched in the top four.
The Dockers pushed the visitors hard throughout the match but ultimately fell short, with Port winning 17.10 (112) to 16.6 (102) for its fourth straight victory over Fremantle at Subiaco.
Fremantle kicked the first three goals of the final term to level the scores and appeared to have all the running, but Port replied with three majors of its own to escape with a 10-point win.
Peter Burgoyne was outstanding for the Power, finishing with 30 possessions and a goal while Fremantle captain Peter Bell did his best to lift his side with three goals, including the first two of the last term.
Port consolidated its position near the top of the ladder and enter the mid-season break sitting pretty with a 9-4 record, while Fremantle slip to 7-6.
Fremantle looked the sharpest it had for some time in the early stages following a difficult last six weeks.
A period of four losses from five games was followed by last week's unconvincing victory over Richmond at the MCG, but it appeared ready to play against the Power.
Des Headland kicked just his fifth goal of the season from an impossible angle in the opening minutes and Jeff Farmer got his first a short time later as the home side showed signs of finally recapturing some form.
But Port soon steadied and the teams began trading goals before the Power got the upper hand late in the second quarter, with Roger James and Jarrad Schofield kicking two goals for the term.
