Lowy to choose SA board
Australian soccer's stakeholders have agreed to let expected new chairman Frank Lowy choose the make-up of a board to run Soccer Australia.
After meetings of the national soccer league commission and state federations it was determined Australia's second richest man should have the final say on who'll run the game with him.
A showdown over the scathing Crawford Report has been averted - at least for the time being - after the stakeholders did not name any directors for an interim board.
Indications had been that the states and clubs would put up three of their own people to potentially sit with Lowy, Melbourne businessman Ron Walker and advertising guru John Singleton on the SA board.
But that did not eventuate with the stakeholders taking a more conciliatory approach.
"At the end we'll just have to accept that Frank has to make a decision and will choose his own people and if we are successful in putting up any names that would be good," said a stakeholder tonight who did not wish to be named.
"We took the line that he is going to be chairman and he has to work with the people.
"It was unanimous by the stakeholders that we are going to work with the report and Mr Lowy.
"We expect that a mutually acceptable board will be put in place."
Pressed on whether the clubs and states would still push for representation on the board, the stakeholder said it was a negotiation process.
