Crackdown on gangsters at racecourses
Gangsters and organised crime bosses will be banned from Victorian racecourses under new laws expected to be passed before the Spring Racing Carnival.
The new bans would apply to 67 gallops, harness and greyhound tracks, News Limited says.
The state government crackdown is a hefty blow to those banned from 14 major tracks, including Flemington, Caulfield and Moonee Valley.
News Limited revealed the number of underworld identities banned was 34.
They are also banned from Crown Casino.
They have no right of appeal.
Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon will not reveal their names.
The ban comes two years after fugitive drug baron Tony Mokbel was seen at Oaks Day at Flemington.
Mokbel has said he won hundreds of thousands of dollars during the carnival while on bail for drug charges.
A banned identity said the news of the crackdown was not worrying.
"That's old news, mate. They sent me a letter a while ago," the man said. "I'm not worried about that."
Racing Victoria chief steward Des Gleeson said his staff took the bans very seriously.
"I think it's important to the image of racing that only those people who are entitled to be there, are there," Mr Gleeson said. "If we observe them at the races, we will notify the cops."
