Skandia says it's right to go
Connections of defending Sydney to Hobart line honours winner Skandia branded the hubbub over the weigh-in for the big boats a "storm in a teacup" after declaring they had been cleared to contest this year's race.
Three of the top four contenders for line honours, New Zealand's Konica Minolta, fellow super maxi Skandia and pocket maxi AAPT, failed a weigh-in on Tuesday, which effectively ruled their certificates invalid.
However, all three boats were expecting to line up for the start of the great race in Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day.
Of the four fancied boats, only brand new maxi Nicorette passed the weigh-in.
Nicorette's skipper Ludde Ingvall continued to cast doubt over the eligibility to race of the other three boats, but all were tipped to take their place in a fleet which is likely to number 117 boats.
Although Skandia didn't conform to the weight on its certificate, the connections of the Victorian 98-foot boat stressed they had been cleared to race by the Royal Ocean Racing Club in Britain.
"We got the news late last night and we all slept well," a spokesperson for Skandia said.
"The Royal Ocean Racing Club felt that the change of weight was so insignificant. It really is a storm in a teacup.
"We got another racing certificate which allows us to sail to Hobart under the same configuration we were planning to do two days ago."
Members of the Konica Minolta team were equally adamant their boat would have no problems meeting their requirements despite the result of the weigh-in.
