Bradman cap fetches record price
Sir Donald Bradman's famous baggy green cap has been sold for a world record $425,000 to an anonymous Australian buyer who will put it on public display.
The price eclipses the amount paid for any piece of Bradman memorabilia, Melbourne-based auctioneers Ludgrove's International said in a statement.
The auction house's chairman Graham Halbish said it had planned to auction the cap in London on July 29, but received considerable pre-sale interest from Australian and international collectors.
Bradman wore the cap on his final tour of England, scoring his final Test century in the 1948 baggy green and when making the most talked about duck in Test cricket in his final Test appearance.
The pre-auction purchase has ended a campaign initiated by News Limited newspapers for the Australian public to donate funds to secure the treasured cap.
The new owner is planning to put the cap on public display, Mr Halbish said.
Bradman, Australia's most revered sportsman, died in Adelaide on February 25, 2001. He was 92.
