Swans name Hall, Magpies name Fraser
Sydney and Collingwood have named key big men Barry Hall and Josh Fraser for Saturday night's AFL clash at Telstra Stadium despite earlier fears they might not have shrugged off soreness for the round 12 blockbuster.
Hall was afflicted by hamstring soreness during the round 11 loss to St Kilda but trained with his Swans teammates and was named in the forward line, where the captain has played every game this season and booted 41 goals.
Fraser has struggled to recover from the Queen's Birthday loss to Melbourne and an exhausting workload this season as the Magpies' No.1 ruckman, but is expected to train and should play in the stand-alone feature game, where third spot is up for grabs.
"He just needed the rest," said Collingwood football operations manager Mark Kleiman about Fraser's limited training time since the loss to the Demons and over the mid-season break.
"He'll train tomorrow and he'll be right to go."
Sydney coach Paul Roos was confident Hall would play and would like an output similar to his efforts in the four matches before the St Kilda game, where he kicked a combined 20 goals before he managed only one major from five touches against the Saints' Matt Maguire.
"We haven't made a secret of the fact he hasn't trained," Roos said before Swans training.
"Unless he falls over and hurts his knee ... I expect him to play."
The Swans made one change, as experienced onballer Ben Mathews came in for Sean Dempster.
Much-improved midfielder Dane Swan was close to returning for Collingwood from a hamstring tear but just missed out, while fellow onballer Brodie Holland also needed an extra week to recover from an Achilles injury.
Half-back Harry O'Brien and winger Rhyce Shaw came into the side for young pair Adam Iacobucci and Julian Rowe, who had little impact against Melbourne.
In the other game this weekend, Carlton and the Kangaroos both made three changes for tomorrow night's match at Telstra Dome.
The Blues lost captain Anthony Koutoufides to a broken hand and tall utility Ian Prendergast to an abdominal strain, and dropped defender Luke Livingston after the round 11 defeat to West Coast.
Ruck options Adrian Deluca and Dylan McLaren were recalled and named in respective forward and back pockets, while midfielder Andrew Carazzo got another chance after he was one of the best afield for the Northern Bullants in the VFL last weekend.
The Kangaroos will be without tall utility Jade Rawlings through suspension, while Eddie Sansbury and Cameron Thurley made way after the round 11 loss to Richmond.
Midfielder Michael Firrito, small forward Leigh Harding and utility Ben Schwarze came into the side.
