Rugby league star Andrew Johns is set to marry his partner Cathrine Mahoney after proposing to her on a romantic getaway last weekend.

It will be the second marriage for the Newcastle Knights halfback but the Daily Telegraph reports that no date has yet been set for the nuptials.

The pair may wait until he retires from the game.

"I popped the question last week while we were holidaying on Lord Howe Island and Cath said yes," Johns told the Telegraph.

"We are both obviously very happy about it."

The couple met four years ago when Ms Mahoney, then a marketing executive with Sony Music, was promoting a DVD about the league star.

Johns and his first wife Renae split in 2002.

They have a son, Samuel.
