Smith claims eight swim meet gold medals
The Gold Coast's 14-year-old swimming dynamo Daniel Smith wrapped up an amazing five days at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Sunday night when he took his gold medal tally to eight on the final night of the Australian Age Championships.
Not since Ian Thorpe in 1996 - when Australia's greatest Olympian won 10 Australian Age gold medals - has anyone dominated any one age group in Australian swimming.
It was a triumphant meet for the Gold Coast with Southport Olympic, under new coach Glenn Baker, winning the club championship on 1,382 points from Miami (1,174) with the Rohan Taylor-coached Carey Aquatic (Victoria) third on 1,094.
Smith had a disjointed season, suffering a broken wrist, broken ankle and cracked elbow.
"Every time I'd walk into the Miami Pool he'd have something else in plaster," said national head coach Alan Thompson.
"Let's just hope he learns to stay on his skate board and his bike in the future."
On Sunday night, Smith added the 100 metres freestyle and the 100m backstroke to his victories in the 50m, 200m and 400m freestyle, the 200m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley.
Victorian 14-year-old Ellese Zalewski claimed her sixth gold and third Australian Age record of the championships in Sunday's final of the 100m freestyle.
