Rendell wins gold in hammer with record
Australian hammer thrower Stuart Rendell has repeated his efforts from the 1998 Commonwealth Games to win gold with a Games record throw at the MCG.
Canberra schoolteacher Rendell grabbed the gold-medal position with his first effort of the night, a 77.53m throw.
Canada's James Steacy took silver with 74.75m while South African Chris Harmse (73.81) finished with the bronze.
Rendell was the defending champion in the event at Manchester in 2002 but bombed out, coming fourth.
He won gold at Kuala Lumpur with a throw of 74.71m.
The victory was the 11th gold medal for Australia in the track and field.
