Hewat sets record in Waratahs victory
Peter Hewat achieved the highest individual season points tally in the history of the NSW Waratahs, as he helped his team complete a clean sweep of its four-match eastern European rugby tour with a 47-18 win over the Russian national team in Moscow.
Fullback Hewat entered the game requiring 13 points to overhaul the previous record of 238 set by former Waratahs skipper Matthew Burke 12 years ago.
Hewat achieved exactly the tally he needed on the stroke of halftime, when he converted his own intercept try after earlier kicking three conversions.
Hewat, who this year established NSW Super 12 try and point scoring records, finished the game with 17 points from a try and six conversions.
The haul moved him past former Wallaby back David Knox into fourth on the list of the Waratahs all-time leading point scorers.
NSW led 28-10 at halftime and scored seven tries to two in the match at Moscow's National Stadium.
The touring team didn't have things all its own way early on and trailed 3-0 to an early penalty, as Russia applied pressure in the first few minutes.
NSW hit back quickly to lead 21-3, with flanker Will Brame crossing the Russian line and halfback Josh Holmes notching two tries before the 20 minute mark.
Russia scored its first try and closed the deficit to 11 points before Hewat notched his five-pointer with a 50 metre intercept.
The Waratahs scored three tries to one in the second half, with centre Ben Jacobs crossing twice and Sam Norton-Knight once.
