Goodrem in but benched for anthem
Delta Goodrem will perform during Saturday's AFL Grand Final, but in the face of a public relations nightmare she will not sing the national anthem.
Instead, that honour will go to Melbourne stage singer Silvie Paladino, who had complained publicly this week over apparent moves by the AFL to dump her in favour of Goodrem.
AFL General Manager of Marketing and Communications, Colin McLeod, said concerns over the timing of Goodrem's flight from the United States had now been resolved and the Swans fan was able to sing at the grand final.
But the Australian pop singer is now listed for the opening performance of I am Australian and not Advance Australia Fair - the high point of the MCG's pre-match entertainment.
The revisions come after Paladino accused the AFL of behaving unprofessionally after moves on Tuesday to replace her with Goodrem.
Paladino had been locked-in months ago to perform the anthem, and early copies of the AFL Record magazine not only listed her as performing the song at 2.27pm (AEST) but they also featured Ms Paladino's photo.
The AFL's press release issued on Thursday night made no reference to the public fracas over the anthem performance.
Dr McLeod said only: "Ms Goodrem will join (Canadian entertainer) Michael Buble, Dame Edna Everage and Silvie Paladino for the pre-match entertainment".
"This is a wonderful line up of talent, in keeping with the Toyota AFL Grand Finals position as one of Australia's great sporting events."
Dr McLeod said Goodrem's appearance gained extra significance because she had to pull out of a 2003 grand final performance due to illness.
