Phoenix wins netball final
Melbourne Phoenix created national netball league history as it became the first travelling team to win a grand final with a 47-44 victory over Sydney Swifts at Sydney SuperDome on Friday night.
A crowd of 10,507, the largest to ever attend a netball game in Australia, watched Phoenix break open a close game in the final stages of the third quarter.
The teams were tied at 27-27 seven minutes into the quarter, but Phoenix enjoyed a decisive 9-1 run to set up a 37-31 advantage at the final change.
The Swifts left their run too late, failing to get the deficit below six until the final two minutes of the match when four straight goals slashed the gap to just two in the final minute.
Phoenix improved its competition record haul of titles to four and became only the second team after Adelaide in 1998 and `99 to win back-to-back crowns.
It was a third championship in four seasons for Phoenix.
Sydney scored the first goal of the match, but Phoenix replied with the next five.
However the remainder of the first half was a tight sea-sawing affair which featured five lead changes with rarely more than a couple of goals separating the teams.
Sydney led 14-12 at quarter time with Phoenix ahead 23-22 at the long break.
Phoenix took four more attempts and its percentage of 72 was two better than the home team.
