Phoenix hope to blast Swifts away
Melbourne Phoenix coach Lisa Alexander will call on a ghetto blaster and a couple of AFL coaches in a bid to help the defending National Netball League champion make grand final history next Friday.
Minor premier Phoenix scored a 59-43 preliminary home final win over Adelaide Thunderbirds last Friday to advance to this week's season decider against the Sydney Swifts at the Sydney Superdome.
Alexander will employ an unusual strategy at training this week to help prepare her players for a noisy pro-Sydney crowd in a match likely to draw a competition record attendance.
"We are probably going to try to set up some sort of ghetto blaster on Monday for sure, just to simulate the noise that we'll have at the Superdome because it's pretty noisy," Alexander said.
Asked if she had a particular artist in mind, Alexander nominated one of the loudest bands around.
"AC/DC, it has to be", she joked.
Describing herself as an "avid follower" and "great student" of AFL, Alexander also intends to contact her Essendon and Fremantle footballing counterparts, Kevin Sheedy and Chris Connolly.
"Kevin Sheedy prepares his side very well psychologically and I'll just have a bit of a chat to him and find out a few things," Alexander said.
"I speak to Chris Connolly a fair bit because he went to the same college I went to, he's a trained phys ed teacher as I am."
Phoenix will endeavour to become the first away team in the seven year history of the competition to win a grand final.
