Victory, Phoenix finish with 0-all draw
Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix both maintained their places in the A-League top six with a largely uninspiring 0-0 draw at AAMI Park on Wednesday.
In a match with few clear-cut chances, neither side was able to find the net - Wellington having the best of the first half and Victory the two best chances of the second.
The Phoenix looked the more fluent in the first 45 minutes and forced Victory keeper Michael Petkovic into two good first half saves.
First the Socceroo had to dive sharply to stop a ball turned towards goal by his own defender Surat Sukha after just four minutes.
Then Phoenix striker Chris Greenacre's shot just prior to halftime was well saved by Petkovic.
In between, ex-Victory midfielder Nick Ward, who was lively against his old club, hit the post after 11 minutes.
Minus injured skipper Kevin Muscat, the Victory showed more signs of urgency after halftime, with midfielder Carlos Hernandez's 62nd minute shot against Wellington goalkeeper Danny Vukovic their first real chance.
But their best moment came through Brazilian striker Ricardinho in the 70th minute, with a mazy run past two defenders before his shot was well saved by Vukovic.
The Victory now sit fourth, with Wellington now fifth.
The Victory travel to North Queensland for their next match on Saturday, with the Phoenix playing Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park on Sunday.
Victory coach Ernie Merrick felt fatigue was a factor for his side, backing up after their 3-0 win over Brisbane Roar on Sunday and going into a third game in six days this weekend.
"Fatigue took a bit of a toll on us physically and mentally," Merrick said.
"I thought our defence was rock-solid, our midfield wasn't as sharp as they usually are and we didn't create as many chances as we normally do."
Wellington coach Ricki Herbert was pleased his side was still picking up points despite integrating several new players into the team early in the season.
Socceroo defender Jade North was the latest to be added to the starting line-up against the Victory, with the busy Ward and Vukovic in just their second starting appearances for the Phoenix.
"I said at the start of the year it would take us a while - a few different players to come in - but I think we took another step tonight," Herbert said.
"Maybe on another night we would have taken the three points. We've really expressed what we want and how we want it ... and it's for us now to keep building."
