Bott bags three as Broncos slay Dragons
Electrifying Brisbane winger Leon Bott underlined his potential with a blistering three-try performance in the Broncos' 34-24 win over St George Illawarra in a thrilling clash at WIN Stadium on Sunday.
Bott terrorised his opposite number Colin Best all afternoon as the Broncos came back from a early 12-0 deficit to post their fourth win of the year and consign the Dragons to their fifth loss from six starts.
Eighteen-year old Bott, who only made his NRL debut in the premiership opener against North Queensland, scored two tries either side of a Tonie Carroll four-pointer in a 12-minute burst towards the end of the first half which gave the visitors the lead heading into the halftime break.
"He's just pure speed," Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett said.
"I don't think anybody else in our club would probably score those three tries. We'd probably get one, I didn't think we'd get the three.
"He's a very competent football player. He's got a real good football head on his shoulders (and) he's in the right place at the right time."
After Dragons lock Shaun Timmins (48th minute) and Broncos centre Shaun Berrigan (53rd minute) traded tries early in the second half, Bott scored his third try before Brisbane half Brett Seymour gave the visitors what looked like a match-winning 12-point lead with 16 minutes to go.
But the Dragons, spurred on by a boisterous 17,287-strong crowd, set up a grandstand finish when interchange forward Corey Payne beat four defenders to go over next to the posts to bring the home side to within six.
A late Brent Tate try killed off any hopes the red-and-whites may have had of securing their second win of the season.
The Queenslanders were without the services of fullback Karmichael Hunt for much of the game, the 18-year-old knocked out by a Timmins high shot in the 7th minute.
