Hewat helps Waratahs to big win

A personal haul of 34 points by fullback Peter Hewat has helped the Waratahs equal their best ever Super 12 season start as the home side crushed the Bulls 42-12 at Aussie Stadium on Saturday night.

Hewat was in fine touch as NSW ran in its fifth win in as many matches, the same start the side had in 2002, the only year the Waratahs have made the competition's semi-finals.

It seemed there was little Hewat, who only took over at No.15 when Mat Rogers was injured a fortnight ago, could not do as he raced in three tries - including a length of the field effort - as well as potting seven goals.

He bettered erstwhile Waratah Matt Burke's record Super 12 match haul of 33 points, scored against Northern Transvaal in 1997.

The Waratahs dominated in attack and Hewat took care of all the scoring in the opening 40 minutes but the Bulls remained in the hunt thanks to some sloppy hands and a few sketchy moments when NSW were in their own quarter.

Hewat scored after a short side play in the 15th minute and made the Bulls outside backs look silly as he simply straightened up with the ball to go over six minutes later.

But the Bulls hung in.

In the 18th minute they scored a remarkable try through Akona Ndungane, the winger doing his best impression of Elastic Man as he stretched over Waratahs centre Nathan Grey and placed the ball backwards over the line one-handed.

The Bulls second effort was courtesy of some sloppy play by NSW winger Lote Tuqiri, who blindly flicked a ball from just outside his quarter.

It was kicked through by Bulls five eighth Kennedy Tsimba who regathered and scored.
