Kafer interested in Perth Super 14 team
Former World Cup winning Wallaby Rod Kafer has told Western Australia's new Super 14 franchise that he is interested in moving to Perth to take on the head coaching position.
Rugby WA will advertise nationally its head coach and chief executive positions this Saturday, with Kafer fuelling speculation he would be the first man to coach the new team when he resigned as coach of English club side Saracens.
Kafer, Randwick's Michael Cheika, Eastwood's Chris Hickey and former Wallaby Ross Reynolds are believed to be the leading contenders for the position.
Another candidate, Manly's Brian Melrose, withdrew after accepting a backline coaching position with the NSW Waratahs.
Kafer contacted Rugby WA shortly after it was awarded the new franchise last Friday and chairman Geoff Stooke confirmed he was in the running.
"He's one of the guys we spoke to earlier just to confirm coaches that were interested and were prepared to move here and he said he was," Stooke said.
"He sent me an email once we got the gig and said congratulations and that he hopes to speak to us in the future.
"He fits the model we're looking for in terms of the coaching group, but one has to assess other aspects and then evaluate him against other candidates.
"Certainly before he left Australia he had a good reputation, particularly as a backs coach."
Kafer, a member of Australia's 1999 world cup winning squad, has had two mediocre seasons with Saracens, which won't help his bid to coach the new Perth team. The club is currently in eighth position in the Zurich Premiership with four wins from 11 games.
