Broncos appoint Mooney as consultant
Axed Queensland Reds coach Phil Mooney will act as a part-time coaching consultant with the Brisbane Broncos.
Mooney was dumped by the Queensland Rugby Union in September, after leading the Reds to 12th and 13th in his two seasons in charge at Ballymore.
Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen on Thursday confirmed to AAP the cross-code appointment where Mooney will be at the call of head coach Ivan Henjak.
"He wants to coach, preferably coach in rugby union but he hasn't got a job at the moment and he has some talent and some skills and we hope he can offer us something," Cullen said.
"He is very highly regarded."
Mooney made his name by guiding the Australian Under 19s to the 2006 Junior World Cup and is well regarded for his attacking mindset and ability to develop young talent.
While determined to continue his coaching career in rugby union, he was excited about the surprise opportunity.
"Definitely, to be honest it's out of left field and I'm flattered the Broncos thought I could add value there," he told AAP.
"It's great professionally for me to be working with such a highly regarded football team."
Mooney will spend four mornings a week coaching under Henjak in the pre-season.
"I've got to sit down and nut through it with Ivan but the initial discussions are based around catch-pass skills and attack-type stuff," he said.
Mooney put his hand up for the head coach role at the new Melbourne franchise after it was awarded a place in the 2011 Super 15 on Thursday.
"I'm certainly interested for sure," he said.
