Nikolic raring to go
Dan Nikolic has convinced trainer Tony McEvoy of his recovery from a severely corked thigh and is primed to give Fields Of Omagh the ride of his life in Saturday's $3 million Cox Plate (2040m).
Nikolic, who five days ago needed a wheelchair to get to his car after being kicked by a horse at Caulfield, proved his fitness to McEvoy when he rode Fields Of Omagh, Pommery Princess and One World for the stable at Flemington.
McEvoy said Nikolic's determination to be fit for Saturday reflected an insatiable hunger for success in his first Cox Plate.
"He wants this Cox Plate even more than we do," the Lindsay Park trainer said.
"I was very impressed with Dan's attitude this morning.
"I have to commend him on his preparation and his focus, what he has done to get there this week."
On Wednesday, Nikolic forfeited feature-winning rides on Pacific Dancer in the Geelong Cup and the McEvoy-trained Lions Gates in the Geelong Classic to give himself the best chance of being fit for Moonee Valley on Saturday.
Twice a day he has had physiotherapy sessions, as well as aquatic chamber treatment and revolutionary lymphavision therapy which has taken away the haematoma.
McEvoy said Fields Of Omagh was at his peak for the Cox Plate.
"He is as good as I can get him," McEvoy said.
