British amateur tour cut short
A national tour by the British Amateur Rugby League (BARLA) side has been cut short after one player was reportedly arrested and sent home with three teammates following a pub brawl.
British newspaper The Guardian said the amateur side had no choice but to forfeit its tour finale against a NSW combined police-services side in Sydney last Saturday after being left with just 11 fit players.
The report said four players - Paul Raftery, Gary Weymes, Lawrence Wildbore and Carl Jones - were sent home after being involved "in a series of incidents" in a pub at Gunnedah in northern NSW and then fought among themselves at the team hotel.
The trouble started after the side was beaten 50-24 in a match against an Australian Aboriginal team on July 10 at Gunnedah.
The Guardian said Raftery was arrested and fined $2000 for assault causing actual bodily harm and ordered home with three teammates.
That left the touring side with just 11 players after two teammates had earlier returned home due to injury and personal reasons respectively and another five were placed on the injury list following a 46-6 win over a Many Rivers side at Kempsey on July 14.
"I am very concerned about what has apparently happened," BARLA chairman Maurice Oldroyd told The Guardian.
"I don't want to prejudice anything but there will be a full investigation on their return."
