Mum asks Willie to give game away
Willie Mason's mum says her son needs to go easy on the drink and should consider giving up the game that has made him a household name.
Sonia Mason said she was ready to ask the controversial rugby league star to give the game away in the wake of the NSW team bonding debacle.
She also asked her son to "use his head" and "take it easy on the drink" after he was fined $6,000 by the NSW Rugby League on three counts of misbehaviour during an alcohol-fuelled Blues bonding session last week.
"I was prepared to tell him, pick up his stuff and leave ... get out of the game," she told the Seven Network.
The bonding session debacle was the latest controversy for Mason who has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
Besides the NSW camp drama, Mason was fined $10,000 by the Bulldogs recently for dressing inappropriately for police interviews into sexual assault allegations against the NRL club.
And last year he was fined $25,000 by the Bulldogs for testing positive to a banned substance.
Mrs Mason, a single mother of eight, said she was upset over the recent headlines and had told her son to watch his alcohol consumption.
"I feel hurt and disappointed of course, I feel like I've been crying since I heard it on Friday," she said.
"He doesn't read the newspaper or listen to the radio (now).
