AFL ponders taller goalposts
Taller goal and behind posts have overtaken doubling the number of goal umpires as the AFL's preferred option of avoiding goal umpiring blunders.
The AFL has called for suggestions on the best way of ensuring there are no repeats of the wrong call that gave St Kilda's Aussie Jones a behind on Saturday night, helping the Saints beat Brisbane by one point.
Umpires' coach Rowan Sawers confirmed goal umpire Craig Clark made a mistake at Telstra Dome by awarding Jones' late shot a behind and not calling it out on the full.
The mistake - scrutinised ad nauseam since - reignited the call for two goal umpires at each end.
While the AFL appeared to soften its previously-hardline stance against doubling the number, it also warmed to taller goal and behind posts.
AFL football operations general manager Adrian Anderson said more goal umpires would not necessarily reduce mistakes and added games already had enough officials.
"Our game is principally about the players and what they do with the ball on the field," he said.
"We're always reluctant to increase the number of officials where possible and there needs to be a clear case that it's worth introducing to push ahead and go down that track."
The AFL is also concerned extra umpires would mean doubling wages and that there might not be enough talent to spread at the elite level.
Anderson ruled out video replays for contentious decisions as they slowed the game down, but said taller posts might be a solution.
