Extra trip to suit Scenic Boom
Scenic Boom failed to flatter in the Group Two Villiers Stakes last weekend but trainer David Payne believes the 2000m of Saturday's De Bortoli Wines Handicap at Rosehill gives him the chance to make amends.
The six-year-old looked to have returned in good order when he resumed to score a convincing win at Randwick in late November to notch his seventh success.
Payne stepped him up to Group Three level in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup a fortnight later but he finished down the track to Stoway and could manage little better in the Villiers at Randwick on Saturday won by On A High.
However, Payne has warned Scenic Boom had excuses in that race and the extra 400m of Saturday's event would suit him down to the ground.
"He missed the start in the Villiers and raced in the worst going," Payne said.
"Nothing went right for him at all.
"I think he's been waiting for 2000 metres where he can get running room and be left alone."
Scenic Boom has drawn well in barrier four and Payne has engaged Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Glen Boss for the mount.
The former South African has no doubt Scenic Boom has come through his Villiers run unscathed and won't be disadvantaged by the quick back-up.
"He has pulled up well and he is a tough little horse," Payne said.
