Tigers fans to scramble for 300 tickets
Thousands of passionate Wests Tigers fans will be fighting over just 300 seats as the NRL promised a review of finals ticketing procedures to ensure the situation never happens again.
NRL chief executive David Gallop on Tuesday said he was considering releasing tickets to future finals matches only when it was known which teams were playing to ensure fans didn't miss out.
But the move was of little consolation to angry fans or Wests Tigers officials, who slammed the NRL's decision not to shift Saturday's sellout grand final qualifier against St George Illawarra from Aussie Stadium to the 80,000-seat Telstra Stadium to accommodate demand.
While an extra 300 tickets have been made available for Tigers season ticket holders, assistant coach Royce Simmons said administrators had made a "blue" by shutting out the Tigers faithful.
"I would have much preferred this week to go to Homebush where we should have had 70 or 80 000 people," Simmons said.
"So it's a blue been made there by someone ... it's certainly a big disappointment for so many of our fans and so many of our season ticket holders.
"These people have supported us all year. Rugby League's about the players and it's also about the fans that go and support it - without fans you don't operate."
Tigers CEO Steve Noyce said the club had been inundated with complaints from irate fans.
"In a perfect world it would have turned out better and I think any business that turns away 30,000 paying customers is going down the wrong path, but I can't change that," he said.
"It's certainly taken some shine off what was a magnificent day on Sunday.
