Lockyer, Broncos continue contract talks
Darren Lockyer's contract talks are heading in the right direction but still have some way to go, club chief executive Bruno Cullen said.
Cullen is hoping to have more talks with Lockyer's Sydney-based agent George Mimis this week but said the club's focus was squarely on Friday night's big NRL clash with Wayne Bennett's Dragons.
"Nothing will be happening this week," said Cullen when asked how talks with stars Lockyer and Karmichael Hunt were progressing.
"We don't want any distractions, the week will be big enough.
"If I can, I will probably talk to George.
"It would just be George and I, not Lockyer and it won't be tying any deals up, just moving things forward.
"There's still a fair bit of work to do so we've both got to get into it.
"We agreed last week to try and have more talks this week but we won't be signing players to any deals.
"It's still a work in progress."
Brisbane need to lock up Lockyer's new two-year deal before they know how much is left should Hunt decide he wants to stay.
The club withdrew its reported $1 million-plus three year offer to Hunt earlier this month when he indicated he wanted to test the waters following reports Japanese rugby union was keen on him on advice from former Wallaby coach Eddie Jones.
Hunt, who played well in Brisbane's first three games, is understood to still be upset over some media's reporting of police investigations into a sexual assault allegations last year.
He doesn't want to play for a rival NRL club but could head to the UK or even Japan to escape the spotlight.
