Titans on fire as virus grounds Eels

Superb performances from Preston Campbell and Scott Prince combined with a mystery virus sweeping the Parramatta camp helped the Titans to a 38-12 victory in the NRL clash at Carrara.

Campbell and Laffranchi, who each bagged a brace of tries, played their way into Country Origin jerseys with a dominant display against the Eels, who had eight players suffering from a nasty virus that has been circulating around western Sydney.

In front of a sell-out crowd of more than 18,000, co-captain Scott Prince set up five of his team's seven tries as the Titans cemented a top eight spot with their fourth win of the season.

Eels workhorse Nathan Hindmarsh was tremendous in a losing side in his third game in nine days.

The Kangaroos back-rower scored a try, made 43 tackles and nine hit-ups for an 111 metre gain.

Asked whether it was the Titans' best attacking performance of the year, coach John Cartwright replied: "I think right across the board it was.

"The forwards were really good. They played a pretty basic game.

"It's probably the most they have dominated this year as a pack and then these fellas (Campbell and Prince) can play ad lib off the back of that."

The Eels were flat from the kick-off but it wasn't surprising following revelations that eight ill players shouldn't have even been on the paddock in the round seven encounter.

Halfback Tim Smith could manage only half a game while robust centre Ben Smith was a late withdrawal.

Skipper Nathan Cayless, Blake Green, Fuifui Moimoi, Josh Cordoba, Aaron Cannings and Joel Reddy were also off colour after the virus struck on Thursday.

"We don't know where it's come from and there's no common factor we can find like the restaurant or a meal," Johnson said about the virus, which causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

To compound Parramatta's misery, Moimoi suffered medial ligament damage and Timana Tahu was forced to withdraw from the Country squad due to a hamstring strain.

"It just looked like we were a very flat football team for some reasons medically, for some reasons physically," coach Michael Hagan commented.

"I still think it wasn't acceptable as far as the kind of performance we gave."

Cayless added: "It is the NRL and if you put your hand up to play then you have to go out there and perform.

"It was pretty tough. We shouldn't take anything away from the Titans. They thoroughly deserved their win."

Cartwright said the combination between Prince and Campbell was getting better every week.

"A lot of the things out there, it looks like they've practiced but it's not," he pointed out.

"It's just instinct and that's the type of players they are."

In a tumultuous week for the Titans in which winger Chris Walker came close to being sacked, Cartwright said he was pleased his players were able to focus on their football.

"Having a sense of humour helps too," he added.

The game was effectively over at halftime when the Titans had streaked to a 22-0 lead following tries to Laffranchi, Jake Webster, Josh Graham and Mat Rogers.

In the second half Laffranchi and Matt Petersen, who justified his late selection ahead of axed winger Lelea Paea, added to the carnage before the Titans put the cue in the rack as they conceded tries to hooker PJ Marsh and Hindmarsh.

Dual international Rogers, who finished the match with a jarred shoulder, scored a 76th minute try off a Luke Burt error to jag his double and cap an impressive win.
