Magpie Fasolo sweating on AFL finals spot
Exciting young Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo admits he faces a nervous time ahead of team selection for what could be his first AFL final.
The skilful first-year Magpie has made a big impact since making his debut in round 12, playing 11 games in all, including Collingwood's past 10.
But with the minor premiers likely to regain established players Nick Maxwell, Leon Davis and Heath Shaw for Saturday's clash with West Coast, there will be a squeeze on spots.
While the 19-year-old plays at the opposite end to that trio, his status as one of just two first-year players, along with Ben Sinclair, in the team that lost to Geelong on Friday night, has him potentially in the firing line.
"I'm a little bit nervous, but we look at that as a positive. It's great for the team to have those blokes coming back," Fasolo said on Wednesday.
"Obviously we've missed Heath the past eight weeks, so it's really good to have all three of them back and they trained well today, so it's a positive for the club."
Fasolo, who has kicked 15 goals in his 11 games, said he had already exceeded his own expectations this year.
"I obviously came to the best team in the country.
"I had high expectations of myself, but if you told me I would have played 11 games by now at the start of the season, I would have been a bit surprised."
Fasolo, who has delighted the Collingwood fans at times with his knack of kicking clever goals, including a five-goal haul in the round 19 win over Essendon, said it had been a thrilling experience.
"It's amazing, absolutely amazing. I've been lucky enough to play in front of big crowds, that's what you get playing for Collingwood and it's an amazing feeling."
